Detroit Pistons is a professional basketball team which was founded in1941 as Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons. The team was located in Indiana and the owner of the team Fred Zollner, had a company which manufactured pistons for General Motors. The Pistons is among the eight team teams in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association and it is named after the Zollner Machine Company. Detroit Pistons were earlier known as Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons (1941-48) and Fort Wayne Pistons (1948-57). In its early years, the Pistons included by star forward George Yardley. Detroit Pistons were a famous team and it took part in the 1954 and 1955 NBA finals, but lost eventually. The team shifted from Indiana to Detroit in 1957 as the city did not have an NBA franchise. After shifting to Detroit , the Pistons played their first four seasons in Olympia Stadium, but later changed to Cobo Arena .Guard Dave Bing also played for the Pistons during the period and won the rookie of the year award in the 1966-67 season. Later, the performance of the team dropped both on the court and box office. In 1974, Zollner sold the team to Bill Davidson, and he is still the present owner of the team. Davidson was not satisfied with the current location of the team in Detroit and shifted the team to the suburb of Pontiac in 1978. Here the team's arena was mammoth Silverdome which was basically an arena for professional football.

During the 1980s and 1990s the Pistons were counted among the top teams in the league, reaching the NBA Finals from 1988 to 1990. The team drafted point guard Isiah Thomas in 1981 and later included center Bill Laimbeer and guard Vinnie Johnson in 1982. Further with Joe Dumars, Rick Mahorn, and Dennis Rodman playing for the team, the Pistons rose to the top position in the League. Under the guidance of Coach Chuck Daly, the team played the NBA Finals for three successive years from 1988-90 and won NBA championships in 1989 and 1990. After a staggering performance for few years, the Pistons have again come up winning the 2004 NBA Championship, coached by Hall of Fame inductee Larry Brown. The Pistons team now plays in The Palace of Auburn Hills near Detroit , Michigan . Team players wear official jerseys which has colors red, white, and blue.
